Shopping List
  • 1 (8 ounce) pack tempeh
  • 3 tablespoons avocado oil
  • 2 tablespoons low-sodium tamari
  • 2 tablespoons maple syrup
  • 1 teaspoon liquid smoke
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • black pepper, to taste

Instructions
  1. Step 1: Steam the tempeh block in a steamer for 3 minutes. This will remove bitterness and help the tempeh soak up more flavor.
  2. Step 2: Use a sharp knife to slice the tempeh very thin, into about 1/8-inch slices if possible. The thinner the slices, the crispier they will get.
  3. Step 3: Heat the avocado oil in a frying pan over medium-high heat. Add the tempeh slices and cook until browned, about 3 minutes per side.
  4. Step 4: Meanwhile, stir together 2 tablespoons of water with the tamari, maple syrup, liquid smoke, paprika, and black pepper in a small bowl.
  5. Step 5: Once the tempeh have seared, pour the tamari mixture over everything. Let the tempeh brown in the sauce until it has all cooked off, about 3 minutes total. Flip the tempeh over after the first 2 minutes.
  6. Serve: Enjoy this as is, or in Kimchi and Avocado Toast or in Bacon and Date Kale Salad.
