Air Fryer Tofu with Garlic Soy Sauce

Lightly crispy tofu made in the air fryer and then topped with the most delicious sweet and garlicky Asian-inspired sauce. This restaurant-worthy meal is a breeze to put on the table, especially if you make the sauce ahead of time. Try serving it with white rice and/or cabbage or romaine for a winning combination.

Tofu
- 1 (14 ounce) package medium-firm tofu
- 4 tablespoons corn starch or cassava flour
- high-heat cooking oil spray
- sliced scallions and red pepper flakes, for topping Garlic Soy Sauce
- 3 tablespoons water
- 1 1/2 tablespoons avocado oil or grapeseed oil
- 1 tablespoon low-sodium tamari
- 2 teaspoons sugar
- 4 cloves garlic, finely minced
- 1 heaping tablespoon(s) ginger, chopped
- 1 scallion, chopped (white and light green parts only)
Instructions
- Step 1: Remove the tofu from the packaging and drain out all of the liquid inside. Slice the tofu block(s) into 4 slabs total. Press the tofu slabs using a tofu press, or wrap each slab in clean, absorbent towels. You can use paper towels or clean reusable ones. Set the wrapped tofu on a cutting board and then set something heavy on top of it. A heavy pan or book would work. Press out the moisture in this way for 15 to 20 minutes (this will give a crispier texture later).
- Step 2: Meanwhile, let's prepare the sauce. Heat the oil in a frying pan over medium-high heat. Once hot, add the garlic, ginger, and scallion. Cook for 1 minute, stirring often. Add the remaining water, tamari, and sugar to the pan. Cook for another 2 to 3 minutes, or until the sauce has reduced slightly and smells quite fragrant. Set aside.
- Step 3: Preheat the air fryer to 390°F. Coat the tofu slabs on all sides in the flour or starch. Once the air fryer is ready, place the tofu in the air fryer basket and spray very generously with oil (there should be no white floury patches on the tops of the tofu).
- Step 4: Air fry the tofu for 6 to 7 minutes. At the halfway mark, use tongs to carefully flip the tofu slabs over so that the side that was on the bottom is now on top. Spray generously with oil and continue cooking.
- Serve: Transfer the tofu onto plates and drizzle generously with the sauce. Top with scallions and red pepper flakes. Enjoy immediately.
