Maple Blackened Tempeh
Valentina P
Easy blackened tempeh steaks made with 3 ingredients — tempeh, maple syrup, and seasoning. Ready in minutes.
How To MakeDiet Type: Plant-based
Shopping List
- 1 (8 ounce) package tempeh
- 1 1/2 to 2 tablespoons maple syrup (adjust to taste)
- 2 tablespoons avocado oil (divided)
- 2 teaspoons all-purpose seasoning (Note 1)
- liquid smoke, to taste (optional)
- salt and pepper, to taste
Instructions
- Step 1: Steam the tempeh in boiling water for 6 to 8 minutes. Remove and pat dry. This step will tenderize the tempeh and help remove any bitterness.
- Step 2: Cut the tempeh package(s) in half both horizontally and vertically, making 4 "cutlets" per package. Coat the tempeh all over with 1 tablespoon(s) of the oil. Season on all sides with the seasoning spice, salt, and pepper.
- Step 3: Heat the remaining 1 tablespoon of oil in a skillet over medium-high heat. Add the tempeh and cook 3 to 4 minutes per side, or until it begins to crisp and get color.
- Step 4: After both sides have cooked, brush 1 tablespoon of the maple syrup over the sides of the tempeh that are currently facing up. Coat the whole surface, using the back of a spoon if needed. Once coated, flip the tempeh over so that syrup side is now facing down. Coat the other side of the tempeh with the remaining maple syrup. Cook the tempeh for 45 to 60 seconds per side, or until it gets a slight black char. The syrup will burn quickly, so keep an eye on it.
- Step 5: Right before the tempeh seems done, add a few drops of the optional liquid smoke (not too much) over the tempeh and give the pan a quick shake to coat.
- Serve: Enoy. This is great alongside Raw Broccoli Crunch Salad.
